AI and IoT for elderly care
Today after playing tennis, my friend and I started chatting. My friend is a caregiver at a local hospital in Cambridge. Most of his time, he attends to elderly patients at the hospital who are suffering from dementia.
Aging societies is not just a UK phenomenon. All societies in the world are in the midst of longevity revolution. By 2050, 1 in 6 people in the world will be over the age of 65, up from 1 in 11 in 2019.
The demand for health care services will increase with an aging society. Hospitals and health care services will need to utilize AI and IoT technology to serve this senior population segment.
Seniors also need care from their family members and nurses at home. Elderly care means considering a family member’s emotional, physical, mental well-being and their daily life activities.
A solution is to install multiple motion sensors at various locations in the house. A hub connects these motion sensors over Bluetooth low energy. AI learns about the daily behaviors of the elders and will detect an anomaly in the elderly behavior and generate alerts to the caregiver. Then the caregiver can visit or call to ensure the well-being of elders. Elders are more accommodating about motion sensors than video-based solutions, which invades privacy.
