Samosa - The Asian Pastry

I still remember the delicious samosas from street vendor outside the Punjab university swimming pool in Lahore. He made samosas on demand in wok. My friend Zia and I used to devour them after swimming during late afternoons in hot summer. Those were stress free and fun filled days.

Samosa is fried pastry with a filling usually potatoes, vegetables or minced meat. It is often eaten with a sour chutney or with spicy chickpeas or both. Samosa originated in Central Asia or Middle East and was first mentioned in literature in 11th century.

Later on in my university days, I often visited my uncle at his garment shop in Anarkali Bazaar, Lahore. This bazaar is two centuries old and known for traditional food, dresses etc. During my trips, I used to enjoy samosas from local sweet shops. In my view, those are best samosas! Also in a student budget, its the best value for money and fills the stomach completely.

My father used to love samosas ! Both myself and him have fond memories of delicious Lahori food. I am now in my early forties and diagnosed as pre-diabetic. I have lost considerable weight to avoid having diabetes and to have a good quality of life. On my last trip to Pakistan, I enjoyed all the deep-fried yummy food in moderate doses and did cardio workouts e.g. jogging, long walks :)
